S.T.A.R. in Government Hill
S.T.A.R. (Students Together Achieving Revitalization) is a partnership between the Office of Historic Preservation, the UTSA College of Architecture, San Antonio College, the Historic Preservation Association (HPA), and local contractors to provide minor exterior home repairs and maintenance to homeowners within local historic districts. Graduate and undergraduate architecture students assist property owners with repairs to windows and screens, siding, and porches, as well as provide general yard maintenance and exterior painting. Several contractors have generously volunteered their time to work with students, and other sponsors have donated food, supplies, and funding.
The S.T.A.R. program will provide services to homeowners in the Government Hill Historic District on November 17 and 18, 2012.
Past S.T.A.R. projects have assisted numerous homeowners in the Dignowity Hill and Tobin Hill Historic Districts. The most recent S.T.A.R. project focused again on the Tobin Hill Historic District and, for the first time, the Five Points neighborhood. Students and contractors assisted homeowners for two weekends on March 24-25 and March 31-April 1, 2012.
Visit the Office of Historic Preservation's website for more information and photos of the work done in both neighborhoods. If you are a contractor or other volunteer interested in assisting with this program or if you would like to provide sponsorship for the upcoming S.T.A.R. project, please visit the OHP website or contact Adriana Munoz at (210) 207-0166 or adriana.munoz@sanantonio.gov.
